Mary de Rachewiltz, Ezra Pound, and the Battle for Western Civilization

Mary de Rachewiltz (1925-2026) has died at the age of 101. She wasn't exactly a household name but as the daughter of Ezra Pound and Olga Rudge, she was somewhat famous in European and American artistic circles. But her reputation was tarnished at least in part by her father Ezra and his associations with Fascism and Mussolini and the fact that she devoted most of her adult life to curating his work and memory.

The Death of Evil Men

In April of 2025, former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage died. Given that his was not a household name his death didn't receive a lot of coverage though most major outlets picked up the story. He had played an important role in the Bush administration serving as Colin Powell's #2. Previously he had held other second tier positions within Republican politics. He was probably best known for his connections to the Vietnam War. Armitage played a prominent role in the 2014 PBS film Last Days in Vietnam, as well as the 2025 Netflix Turning Point series on the war.

Recently Ahmed al-Sharaa (formerly al-Julani) met with David Petraeus at the UN General Assembly. It was a unique moment that quite a few news outlets found worthy of note. And while some saw it has symbolic, few reflected on its actual meaning.
They tended to focus on how far al-Sharaa had come, how he had once been a prisoner of the US, and a member of al Qaeda. And yet (supposedly) he has renounced his previous Salafism and is now being put forward as a leader that will turn Syria toward Western Liberalism, democracy, and the rule of law - or so they hope.

Revisiting Citizen Four

It's been ten years since its release and I finally got around to watching Citizen Four, the Snowden documentary by Laura Poitras. Why did it take me so long? I knew the story and had followed it closely at the time and the film didn't reveal anything new - but it was interesting to see the footage and relive the moment and re-catch the energy and zeitgeist of that time.

Closing the Book on the Assange Era

There are clearly some who are unhappy with Assange's release and believe he should have been either executed or incarcerated for life. The same day as the Notre Dame fire (which dominated the news) - the UK government arrested him in April 2019 at the Ecuadorian embassy where he had already been holed up since 2012. The reasons for his hiding in the embassy are rooted in bogus (and now dropped) charges of rape in Sweden. He suspected that as soon as he ended up in a UK court for an extradition hearing, the US would intervene and unwrap a sealed indictment against him. Its existence was an all but an open secret.

The Central Asian states which were run by former Soviet apparatchiks (turned into authoritarian capitalists) relied upon energy revenue and the extraction of natural resources – and in the post-Soviet setting Western corporations flooded into the region to develop these sectors. Wall Street scored major victories and wealthy oligarchies developed in the Central Asian states. Needless to say corruption is endemic. This new post-Cold War political order and economic development in part explains the ongoing tensions with Russia, Iran, and Afghanistan. The logistics of getting resources out of landlocked Central Asia proved daunting and were never resolved. The ruling oligarchies were plugged into the energy economy and these countries rely on this money to function and pay the bills as it were.

The stage for all of this was set in the aftermath of 9/11 and increasingly as people no longer consider the surrendering of their privacy and data to be anything controversial, and as generations of lock-step, wave the flag, support the troops, my country right or wrong nationalism has come to dominate – this story isn't even controversial.

Chinese Evangelicals and the NED

The National Endowment for Democracy isn't just a US government backed NGO that promotes democratic institutions. In the case of Hong Kong it is actively involved in promoting the protests. That the NED often functions as an arm of US intelligence, interferes with democracy and promotes regime change is actually old news for those who have been watching for many years.

This is why (once again) it is tragic that Chinese and in this case Hong Kong based Evangelicals are getting involved with what amounts to a US intelligence operation. Are the protests wholly the creation of the United States? I doubt anyone would actually suggest that. There are plenty of social forces and tensions at work that are helping to fuel the protests and yet as they ebb and flow, the Americans are there to make sure people stay out on the street. Money can work wonders. It's much the same with striking workers. They can keep going, keep protesting as long as the money is there for them to feed their families and pay their bills.

This is where the NED (and sometimes USAID) and US intelligence (often operating through the embassy or consulate) is able to step in. This was the playbook in Iran in 1953 that led to the overthrow of Mosaddegh. It's been used many times.

These are the games empires play. We shouldn't be shocked or even surprised.

I've been writing about Syria and the Kurds for many years as I was fascinated by these topics long before they became part of the nightly news cycle.

With that perspective I can honestly say that I've been more or less dismissive with regard to the present commentary on the part of the Establishment media and certainly the statements being made by the Right and the Evangelical audience.

The Kurds have been betrayed by the US on multiple occasions and while there was some protest in the wake of the Gulf War, for the most part few have cared... except now the situation is in reference to Syria and the presidency of Donald Trump.

A CIA whistleblower in the White House has ignited the fires of impeachment, exposing an episode of blatant corruption and disregard for the law on the part of the president. Would that it were so simple. In truth, the whole thing smells rotten. It smells like the Deep State has decided to make its move. Trump is as dirty as they come and yet once again the case being made against him is self-serving to the interests of those who would have him removed, even while they ignore his myriad high crimes and misdemeanors.

Regardless of what you think of Pepe Escobar this article is interesting and raises many salient points. I found myself hooked at the beginning when he started talking about Ahmad Shah Massoud. I remember very well where I was on 9 September 2001 when the news came over the radio that he had been killed. We had just bought an old fixer-upper schoolhouse turned domicile and I was poking around on that Sunday afternoon thinking about the repairs that needed to be done. The radio was tuned to NPR and the story of Massoud's death broke leaving me startled. I had been following Afghanistan for some time and his death was a pretty big deal. You definitely felt like something was going to happen, something would change.

Constantine Kromiadi was a Greco-Russian nationalist who fought on the White side in the Russian Civil Wars. He eventually became a Nazi collaborator who wanted to see Stalin defeated and some form of traditionalist Russia restored.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo got caught on tape and his comments only confirm what many of us have already known.

In addition to admitting that the CIA was attempting to overthrow Maduro during his tenure as head of the CIA, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo now admits that the CIA has sought to utilise religious institutions.

This should make every Christian shudder.

Unfortunately many Evangelicals will not understand that statement and in fact heartily embrace such collaborations.

The Evangelical Worldview and the Legend of GHW Bush

At work I will often turn on the ostensibly Christian radio station at noon to hear the news reported from a Christian worldview. Of course in keeping with the tone and tenor of American Evangelicalism it's often anything but and often engaged in not only a twisting and spinning of current events but of the Scriptures themselves.

But this week was over the top. With the death of Bush, it seemed the whole of American media was obsessed in memorialising the ex-president. The Mainstream wished and even overtly laboured to juxtapose his 'dignified' manner with that of the barbarism displayed by the current White House occupant.

The First Amendment is now by some accounts a Right-wing issue. This strangely has an air of truth to it as the Left is becoming increasingly intolerant of free speech. The ACLU is practically in state of civil war. That said, Right-wing appeals to free speech concerns are disingenuous. They've always been the party of censorship. This is in part why some of the older generation of Leftists are reeling at present by both the Right's new narrative and legal strategy and the direction the Millennial Generation is taking First Amendment jurisprudence.

Sasse: A Danger and Disgrace to Protestant Testimony

If you're a Conservative or Evangelical Christian and you haven't heard of Ben Sasse, then you're probably in the minority. He's young, popular and part of a crop of politicians that has grown up and been 'properly educated' in so-called Worldview teaching. In many ways he's the candidate the Christian Right has been looking for. George W. Bush may have been the 'every-man' Evangelical, the omnibus candidate that could appeal to the wealthy and the working class but by all accounts he was an intellectual lightweight. His heart expressed the sentiments that resonated with the Christian Right but his tongue was unable to articulate the ideas. Time will tell if Sasse is able to have that kind of broad appeal but in terms of not just the lingo but the actual ideas, he's the one their looking for. He's the politician that can truly express the theology and social visions of intellectuals from Abraham Kuyper and Francis Schaeffer to RJ Rushdoony and even figures like Cornelius Van Til.

Risen, Mueller and the False Exposé

I am consistently amazed by people like the former New York Times reporter James Risen. After all they've experienced, after all they've seen and been exposed to, they still harbour a fundamental faith in the system. Are they naive? If they are it's concerning human nature. I am immediately suspicious of anyone who has spent a career in journalism, especially reporting on politics, military and the security state and yet still believes that people are fundamentally good or that apart from a few bad apples... the state apparatus is inhabited for the most part by good, honest folks possessing honour and integrity.

The linked article mentions the Vatican and Hanoi still don't have formal relations and that this is a legacy of communism. The statement is interesting because someone might read it and think something along these lines: The communists were atheistic and thus they would have no interest in establishing diplomatic ties with a theocratic state like the Vatican.
