Not long ago I listened to a sermon on the Rich Young Ruler in Matthew 19 and I was struck by the difficulty the preacher seemed to have in dealing with the passage. I agree, there are some interpretive challenges but I think that often these difficulties are the result of theological baggage that's brought to the text.

An Account of Evangelicalism's Continued Decline
As our routine has been further derailed by my son's injury, I decided on a recent rainy Sunday to revisit an Alliance (CMA) congregation near us that we attended over twenty years ago. I have stopped in on occasion over the years and to be blunt the decline has been remarkable in terms of numbers, content, and overall quality. My recent visit was particularly disappointing.

The Membership-Marriage Fallacy and Other Ecclesiastical Sophisms
The introduction to this article is not unsound. We must be
part of a congregation but the question of 'joining' begs the question with
regard to a denominational polity.

Paul, the Cretans and Addressing Social Sins
Cretans are always liars, evil
beasts, lazy gluttons (Titus 1.12)
This quotation taken from Epimenides and utilised by the
Apostle Paul is used by some to argue that Paul was 'taking on' the evil forces
at work in the culture. He was challenging the culture of Crete and therefore
those Christians who argue for Two Kingdom theology, those Christians who reject
Dominionism are necessarily in error.

Signs and Symbols: Israel and Covenant in Romans 9.6
In Romans 9 Paul launches into a discussion regarding Israel
and brings up the very important question regarding the fate of the Jewish
people. Were these people so long in covenant with God now simply abandoned?
With the inclusion of the Gentiles into the New Covenant were the Jews no
longer part of God's plan? Paul addresses these questions by probing the plan
of God throughout history and unveiling another layer essential to
understanding both the Old Testament and the nature of salvation in general. He
expands on the message he's already been discussing, that salvation has always
been by faith in Christ even before Christ came upon the scene. There is a
grand uniting story but it is told in two very different ways and historical
settings.

Inbox: What about John MacArthur and his theology?
How does he fit into the spectrum of Reformed Theology and the ideas you are
presenting?
I've actually written about MacArthur before but I can
revisit him again.

My Friday Trip to Amishland
I spent some time with the Amish this afternoon. I had to
make a trip out to purchase some rough-cut lumber. There are several groups in
the larger area but the nearest ones live about 10 miles from me. A lot of them
are no longer into farming and we see their construction crews all over our
area. They're cheap, but you often have to pick them up and take them home.
Some travel amazing distances in their buggies.

The Battle over Quiet Time
For many Christians 'Quiet
Time' is an important part of their spirituality. They take some time out of every
day to read their Bible and spend some time in prayer and possibly reading some
other Christian focused book whether it be devotional, commentary or theology.
