I am consistently amazed by people like the former New York
Times reporter James Risen. After all they've experienced, after all they've
seen and been exposed to, they still harbour a fundamental faith in the system.
Are they naive? If they are it's concerning human nature. I am immediately
suspicious of anyone who has spent a career in journalism, especially reporting
on politics, military and the security state and yet still believes that people
are fundamentally good or that apart from a few bad apples... the state
apparatus is inhabited for the most part by good, honest folks possessing
honour and integrity.

Ghosts of WWII: The Murderers Among Us and 1989's Music Box
The title comes from Simon Wiesenthal's famous work. It's the
story of ex-Nazis and fascists with dark pasts blending back into the world and
it's one that draws me back time and again.

Inbox: What does it mean to speak prophetically in our day?
I believe special authoritative revelation ceased with the
end of Apostolic Age. Christ himself was the Final Prophet as it were, at least
according to the clear teaching of the book of Hebrews. And that's just for a
start.
His Apostles by extension were specially commissioned to
'finish' (again, as it were) His ministry and bring out the full revelatory
glory of His Person and work as well as provide us the authoritative
foundations for the New Covenant era. They weren't just Prophets, they were
akin to the Twelve Patriarchs, but this time of the New Israel.

Arlington Cemetery: Tribalism and Idealism, Propaganda and Reflection
It always impresses me when you cross the Arlington Bridge
over the Potomac. After whipping around the Lincoln Memorial and skipping the
right turn to Foggy Bottom and Watergate you cross the bridge and if you look
up there's Robert E. Lee's house looming over you and overlooking Arlington
Cemetery.

Inbox: Lutheranism, Kuyper and the Two Kingdoms
In terms of the differences between the confessional Lutheran
position and my own maybe I can shed a little light, but I will be brief and
paint with a broad brush. I'm also throwing a variant of Reformed Theology into
the mix because I think it's pertinent and may shed a little light for some
readers on a seemingly obscure point of dispute in contemporary Reformed
circles.

The False Narratives of Meese, Scalia and Originalism
Recently former Attorney General Ed Meese was interviewed on
LPR's Issues Etc. and asked to comment on the death of Supreme Court Justice
Antonin Scalia and the coming battle over a replacement for him.
Meese consistently expressed concern for the Constitution,
praised Scalia for his stances, values and defense of the document. In addition
Meese also identified himself as a devoted Lutheran.
The entire interview was a fraud.

A Most Wanted Man (The Myth of Principled Power Part II)
The movie industry is producing some of the most debased and
worthless films ever made and yet at the same time there are a very small
number of excellent and thoughtful films out there. Generally they're not big
hits at the box office but should we expect any different?
What I appreciated most about this John le Carre movie was
the lesson in the nature of power and what happens when someone tries to apply
it in a principled and ethical manner.

The Corrupt System and the Distraction of Wrangling Over Subsidies and Taxes
How many Christians rail against subsidies and condemn those
who benefit from them and yet these same people will support them not only in
the realm of business and in terms of deductions, so-called refunds and credits
but will also happily accept grants for their children to attend universities?
