We are then subjected to ridiculous ad for 'Christian Coffee' whatever that is. To be frank, I'd rather give my money to Starbucks than false Christianity. Don't be fooled, despite their claims, these people have no problem giving their money to support evil. The list of examples is long and would fill an encyclopaedia. It was ridiculous to say the least. Later we are subjected to a sacrilegious soap commercial cast in Dominionist terms and a biography of John Knox is promoted - certainly a whitewash of his actual history and views.

The SBC Founders Find the Road to not just Loserdom but Functional Apostasy (I)
https://www.theblaze.com/abide/meek-not-weak-the-era-of-christian-loserdom-is-over
https://founders.org/podcasts/tstt-must-christians-lose-down-here/
The Founders here refers not to the American Founders but a movement within the Southern Baptist Convention to recover its Calvinist roots from the time of the antebellum split in American Christianity. I remember hearing about this movement back in the 1990's and it was spoken of with great approval and hope. Today, Tom Ascol is the leader of the Founders. I'm not entirely sure if he's cut from the same cloth as earlier men like Ernest Reisinger who got the movement going. There's no doubt that the Founders have played a significant role in the genesis of New Calvinism.

Trueman has Seemingly Lost his Mind
https://firstthings.com/pope-francis-my-worst-protestant-nightmare/
https://wng.org/opinions/an-office-of-great-cultural-significance-1746424321
These articles left me baffled but they demonstrate how cultural and political motivations have taken over and now drive the thinking of most Christians. Trueman in particular surprises me as he once passionately argued for a kind of sober detachment but now is at the forefront of culture war battles even being promoted by and collaborating with the likes of Charles Colson protege John Stonestreet.

A Different Sort of Non-Aligned Movement
When trying to explain how a First Reformation and non-resistance view might operate in today's world and how we might bear witness with regard to events, culture, and geopolitics - and yet not be part of it, I was reminded of the Non-Aligned Movement during the Cold War.

The Architect of Modern Evangelicalism (II)
In many cases his interpretation of culture, politics, and geo-politics will leave the American reader confused. Profoundly conservative, his views on economics are not at all in line with the American Right - and certainly not its waxing Libertarian wing. He condemns laissez-faire policies and the utilitarian arguments that capitalism so often resorts to. He understands that 'money creates power' and warns against it - but then still spends the whole of his life chasing after power and relying on alliances with those who possess wealth. I find it remarkable that he clearly understood and accepted the notion that a Christian political order without a regenerate populace would necessarily result in an oppressive system. It's something American Evangelicals largely do not grasp and of course they don't want to hear it as it flies in the face of the narratives about freedom and liberty. Americans can still dream and fantasize in a way never afforded to the claustrophobic ordering of nations in Europe.
The Architect of Modern Evangelicalism (I)
I recently finished reading James Bratt's 2013 work - Abraham Kuyper: Modern Calvinist, Christian Democrat. I cannot recommend it enough. It was an excellent work, well done, and at times even something of a page turner. While some American readers might struggle at times with the dynamics of 19th century European politics, enough is explained that I think most will be able to persevere through it.

A Thanksgiving Model that Must be Rejected
https://churchandfamilylife.com/podcasts/6540dea48035f112bf38cdf8
Modern Thanksgiving was born out of the US Civil War – In
1863, Lincoln wanted the country to be thankful for the turning of the tide
post-Gettysburg and following his lead the government issued proclamations in
the 1870's.
In 1939 FDR moved the date up a week wishing to extend the
Christmas shopping season – and this remains the practice today.
In other words it's a familiar theme to us even today – it's
about the troops and the consumerist economy.

The Persistent Myth Regarding Moscow and Covid
On numerous occasions in conversation and from the pulpit I have heard Christians appealing to the example of Doug Wilson and his followers in Moscow, Idaho. Inspired by their resistance to 'Covid Tyranny' in the fall of 2020, this group is being held up as an example of courage and Christian conduct.
Little do these Wilson fans realize, what they deem
inspiration is in fact a source of shame, and rather than call attention to an
example of heroism and Christian fortitude, they in fact trumpet their own lack of
discernment.

Chimeric Experimentation and the Bioethics of the Pro-Life Movement (II)
Returning again to the chimeric experimenters, they're tinkering with things that are beyond them. We're not materialists. There's more to life and reality than that which is merely empirical. The reality of the materialists is a reductionism of true reality and Christians shouldn't think in those terms or operate under the ethics that flow from such thinking.
Chimeric Experimentation and the Bioethics of the Pro-Life Movement (I)
The current Evangelical world is rife with scepticism
regarding modern medicine and yet some will remember a time in which the
attitude that long dominated the movement was very much pro-medicine and
pro-technological development. Whether right, wrong, or indifferent, the shift
is interesting and more should be done in examining the reasons behind it.

Inbox: The Glory of the Nations in Revelation 21 and the Question of Eschatological Continuity (I)
Doesn't Revelation 21 teach cultural continuity? Doesn't it teach that cultural attainments will be part of our life in heaven? Are there any historical readings of the passage that specifically refute this? Are there any commentators that argue explicitly for discontinuity in reference to this passage?
Continuity here refers to the idea that cultural progress and
attainments achieved in this age will continue into the age to come. In other
words, advances in the arts, science, philosophy, architecture and the like
will play a part in our heavenly life. Proponents of this view believe that the
productions of the great artists, particularly those that were God-honouring in
what they produced, men such as Bach and Rembrandt will be part of our life in
heaven.

Texas, Florida, and Anti-Sodomy Laws: Some Theological Dangers and Warnings
Many Evangelicals will undoubtedly celebrate the recent legislative moves in Texas and Florida and both governors (one Catholic and one Evangelical) are certainly viewed as allies or even champions in the Christian Right's culture wars.

Christmas 2021: AOC Shames the Evangelicals
What a sad moment. Ocasio-Cortez the much vilified Democratic
representative from New York and member of the hated 'Squad' has spoken truth –
and a truth that puts Evangelicals to shame.

The Role of Scepticism and the Shift to the Right in Mainstream American Politics
Most Conservatives will insist that the American political spectrum has shifted rapidly to the Left over the past fifty years and will make the case by appealing to cultural standards which (admittedly in some respects) have moved away from conservative ideals.

Mammon and the Accommodationist Triad of Feminism, Psychology, and Divorce
We can speak of a Social Accommodationist Triad or SAT. There are many aspects of social life that could be plugged into this equation but in particular it could be argued that three powerful socially transformative forces have been at work in the post-WWII period – and these forces have worked symbiotically to shape and affect the culture.

The Trumpite Schism and the Storming of the US Capitol (Part 2)
Trumpites and Conservatives are desperate to pin the insurrection (in reality a failed coup) on groups like BLM and Antifa but despite their aggressive propaganda campaign, the argument continues to fall flat. What motives would Antifa have to stop the electoral vote? Would they want four more years of Donald Trump?
The Trumpite Schism and the Storming of the US Capitol (Part 1)
I've been struck by the number of Trumpites and Republicans that seem genuinely shocked at the 6 January storming of the Capitol. 'That's not us' they insist. 'Those people don't represent us.' It only shows that these same folks not only do not understand what has happened in American society, they don't understand their own movement, the people they've allied themselves with and what Donald Trump's presidency means.

Pluralism, Modernity, and the Third Constantinian Shift
Recovering the First Reformation - Toward a Proto-Protestant Narrative of Church History (XIV)
Once again we are reminded of the strange relationship
between separatist Christianity and the forces of secularisation and how the
pluralism generated by the latter leads to a more congenial environment for the
Church than the monistic sacralism of the Constantinian paradigm. Indeed in
addition to the folk of the First Reformation, even the early beleaguered Magisterial
Protestants understood that an environment of pagan or even secular opposition
is preferable than persecution at the hands of a hostile Christendom. Better a Turk than a Habsburg is a lost
sentiment but in light of today's Dominionism and its aspirations it's one we
would do well to reconsider. While I don't think the Dominionists are going to
'win' today's struggle they are nevertheless scoring 'victories' and if they
should win and attain the cultural supremacy they so badly want – the old
phrase will once more have relevance even though the context is very different.
They won't hesitate to use the power of the state to silence Christians who
oppose them and use the Bible to expose their error.

Supreme Ironies: The Coney Barrett Nomination
(updated and amended)†
Taking in all the drama and pending procedural battles over
the Amy Coney Barrett nomination I was struck by the numerous ironies that are
at work. Given that the background has grown rather complicated it's something
that few outlets bother to probe or pursue. And yet there's an interesting
story and both political factions come out looking pretty bad.
