Recent news has rekindled memories of the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990's. First, Ratko Mladic died on 27 August. Mladic, Slobodan Milosevic, and Radovan Karadžic are the the most famous Serbian figures associated with the Bosnian War. The Republika Srpska was a Serbian autonomous region within Bosnia - which in turn was a component of the larger Yugoslavia which had already started to break up in 1991 with the departure of both Slovenia and Croatia. In 1992, Bosnian independence led to a conflict with its Serbian population over territorial claims. The Republika Srpska was backed by Belgrade and its Serb-led government.

Twisting the Scriptures, Undermining Biblical Principles, and the Supposed Stewardship of Voting (I)
https://www.vcy.org/crosstalk/2026/02/24/the-bible-and-your-vote/
If you can stomach it, listen to this episode of CrossTalk - or more properly John Birch Society Radio. The show frequently hosts the society's leaders and thinkers and functions as a platform for its brand of Right-wing politics. It's almost a comprehensive study in all that is wrong with the Christian Right and today's Evangelical movement. Woods (the guest) is a bit simplistic to be sure, but he's consistent in his representation of their platform. With the Bible in hand, he launches an assault on New Testament Christianity every bit as subversive as that of James Talarico. The latter won't actually fool anyone grounded in Scripture but Woods and his ilk are persuasive to many and continue to do great harm.

A Misrepresentation of Western Art
https://cne.news/article/4938-how-arts-draw-europe-back-to-paganism
This article struck me as rather strange. In many respects I can resonate with Placentino's concerns about pagan revival in connection with 18th and 19th century Romanticism, but at the same time I found his arguments wanting and often guilty of begging the question.

A Confessional Presbyterian Revels in Idolatry, Nationalism, Apostasy, and Trump
https://reformedpolitics.substack.com/p/religious-gains-2025
Hall's work has been repeatedly promoted on websites like The Aquila Report and I've also encountered him in the podcast world. Hall thinks 'gains' are being made with the Trump presidency. Needless to say there are a lot of assumptions being made as well as the typical pronoun confusion (and the thought that undergirds it) that we've come to expect.

Christian Nationalism, the Wilson Ethos, and the Venture Capital Backing American Reformer
Christian Nationalism is nothing new but it has been re-cast and reinvigorated in recent years. Preferential Pluralism once dominated the Evangelical scene. The absolute nature and universal claims of Reconstructionism were considered fringe and even revolutionary and yet now are mainstream. Basically, Reconstructionism lives on in a slightly modified form. It lives on under the aegis of the more recently named Christian Nationalism.

One of Satan's Ministers in the Pulpit on Memorial Day

SermonAudio blocks anyone who is deemed 'woke' or who embraces too robust a view of works or sacraments. They are guardians of orthodoxy or so they deem - but then they allow this kind of heretical filth. Scudder's sermons receive no sanction or censorship.

Reflecting on Independence Day 2024 (II)
The original nation under the Articles of Confederation wouldn't hold together and so for many the revolution was betrayed by the creation of the Constitution and federalism. Some are aware of this to be sure but the masses of flag wavers are not.

Flags in the Church
https://www.firstthings.com/web-exclusives/2021/11/the-history-of-national-flags-in-churches
The debate over flags in the Church is riddled with problems
and clouded by false assumptions. There is a problem with the sanctuary model
to begin with, the idea that a building is somehow a 'holy' place, a
'sanctuary' or that the front of the structure is some kind of focal point – a
leftover of the unbiblical altar-theology of Romanism.

The Shadow State is Alive and Well

The stage for all of this was set in the aftermath of 9/11
and increasingly as people no longer consider the surrendering of their privacy
and data to be anything controversial, and as generations of lock-step, wave
the flag, support the troops, my country right or wrong nationalism has come to
dominate – this story isn't even controversial.

Afghanistan and the Fall of Saigon
In recent days while reflecting on Afghanistan and the US withdrawal, I have thought more and more of Vietnam and what happened there in 1975. I was prompted to revisit the 2014 PBS film Last Days in Vietnam which was aired at the end of April 2015 – the fortieth anniversary of the fall of Saigon.

The Kamala Harris Tweet, Memorial Day Weekend, and Right-wing Political Correctness
I had to laugh over Memorial Day weekend 2021. I happened to be someplace where I had access to television and so I couldn't help it – I took in some FOX news. It's like the ghost that hovers over the American Church, the proverbial elephant in the room. It's eye-opening to observe this channel which continues to wield such sway over the minds of many who are supposedly renewed in their minds.
The story of the hour was the Kamala Harris tweet.
